COACHING CAN HELP

Students with ADD are often quite talented and bright. The trick for the student is to unlock these talents. Coaching helps through education, self-discovery, accountability, and a focused game-plan.


COACHING IS NOT THERAPY

Counseling works on the emotional issues, medication on neurological issues. Coaching works on the how-to’s. How do I get my homework done? How do I pass my tests, or go from a B to an A. How do I pay attention in class, or juggle all of my assignments and obligations. How do I get out of my own way and achieve success? Coaching helps teach the tools and strategies to get from point A to point B. If there are emotional issues involved, or the student needs meds, coaching becomes just one of the pieces to a team approach that should be taken.


COACHING IS CLIENT DIRECTED

This means the student asks for the help he/she needs. He/she tells the coach what they want to work on rather than the other way around. For example, if they ask for help with homework, we’ll work together to see where they’re struggling, determine what tools and strategies will overcome these challenges, and help them to take control over their assignments.


COACHING IS A TEAM EFFORT

Wherever the student is struggling, we’ll work TOGETHER to develop the strategies to overcome challenges. Everything from building a routine, learning how to take tests, study, or do homework in a way that’s easier for the ADD mind, learning new social skills, goal-setting, and more.

If a student wants to succeed, we’ll find a way to get him/her there. Coaching often involves accountability. It’s easy for ADD’ers to know what to do, but often hard to get the job done. But if they have someone they’re working with, they often ask more, and deliver more of themselves. Coaching is often much more than a weekly or monthly talk on the phone. It can be a short check-in daily or weekly via phone or email to see how things are going, how to help keep things on track, and to learn from any challenges faced.


COACHING IS NON-JUDGMENTAL

There are no screw-ups, no mistakes, and it’s not a matter of discipline or “trying harder.” It’s a matter of figuring out what works, to make it easier and more automatic. When a student doesn’t get the work done, or goes off track, it’s a learning experience…It means what we did didn’t work. But from that lesson we’ll work to discover what DOES work, and then make it REPEATABLE.

The goal of coaching is to help a student overcome challenges, learn their own success strategies, and to help students discover and reach for their dreams…


COACHING IS A VERY INDIVIDUALIZED PROCESS

This means that one coach or one strategy may not be right for everyone. Because of this, it’s best to meet with a coach or have your child talk with a coach before you begin. I offer a free consult to both the parent and/or the student to make sure we’re a good fit and to develop a game-plan for success.


COACHING REQUIRES A MOTIVATED STUDENT

A word on motivation. Coaching is self-directed. It means it’s up to the student where he/she wants to take things and what are his/her goals. The student must want help. Therefore, if the student DOES NOT want coaching, there’s typically nothing a coach can do to help. If the student brings motivation, success is quite likely, without that, there’s not much that can be done.
